Graduate Placement Exam in Vocal Pedagogy (DMA only)
DMA voice majors must demonstrate proficiency in voice pedagogy by passing a pedagogy entrance exam administered during new student orientation, or by taking MUAG 5300 (Science and Pedagogy of the Singing Voice).
The entrance exam will cover topics such as:
Vocal tract acoustics:
Basics of acoustics, vowel formants, singer’s formant
Voice anatomy and physiology:
Major muscles and cartilages of the vocal, respiratory, and articulatory systems
Physiology of phonation, respiration, pitch control, consonant production
Historical pedagogy treatises:
Foundational resources from 18th and 19th centuries
Important personages – historical and current
Founders of historical schools of training: Manuel Garcia, Lampertis, Marchesi, Miller, Vennard, Reid, and others
Basic voice building strategies for growth and development of young voices
Resources may include (not limited to):
