Vocal Pedagogy: Placement Exam and Related Field

 

Vocal Pedagogy Placement Exam (DMA students only): 
DMA voice majors must demonstrate proficiency in voice pedagogy by passing a pedagogy placement exam administered during new student orientation, or by taking MUAG 5300 (Science and Pedagogy of the Singing Voice).
The placement exam will cover topics such as:

- Vocal tract acoustics:  Basics of acoustics, vowel formants, singer’s formant

- Voice anatomy and physiology:  Major muscles and cartilages of the vocal, respiratory, and articulatory systems;  physiology of phonation, respiration, pitch control, consonant production

- Historical pedagogy treatises:  

- Foundational resources from 18th and 19th centuries

- Important personages – historical and current

- Founders of historical schools of training: Manuel Garcia, Lampertis, Marchesi, Miller, Vennard, Reid, and others

- Basic voice building strategies for growth and development of young voices

Related Field in Vocal Pedagogy

The decision to earn a DMA in vocal performance is indicative of a desire to teach voice at the college or university level. Familiarity with basic principles of anatomy, physiology and acoustics of the singing voice are expected in the professional marketplace. Knowledge of pedagogical principles derived from the vast literature on the subject is expected prior to advanced study in order to achieve the level of sophistication necessary for professional work as a teacher. Vocal pedagogy will be covered on the qualifying exams at the end of the course work.

MM Related Field in Vocal Pedagogy (9 hrs.)
MM students may pursue a related field in vocal pedagogy. 9 hours of course work:
MUAG 5300        Science and Pedagogy of Singing (prerequisite for MUAG 5600 and MUAG 5610)
MUAG 5600        Advanced Science and Pedagogy of Singing
MUAG 5610        Comparative Pedagogy of Singing
 
DMA Related Field in Vocal Pedagogy (12 hrs.)
DMA students may pursue a related field in vocal pedagogy. 12 hours of course work:
MUAG 5300        Science and Pedagogy of Singing (prerequisite for MUAG 5600 and MUAG 5610)
MUAG 5600        Advanced Science and Pedagogy of Singing
MUAG 5610        Comparative Pedagogy of Singing
